Internet of Things (IoT) and automation in the industrial and institutional cleaning industry

Next Generation of Tech in the Industrial & Institutional Cleaning Industry

Industries are adopting robots in varying degrees; the automotive industry, for example, has adopted robots more than any other sector, contributing approximately 38% of currently deployed robots worldwide.

But how is automation impacting the industrial and institutional cleaning industry? And how is the Internet of Things (IoT) involved? Read on:

Defining Internet of Things (IoT)

Broadly, IoT can be described as a network of physical objects or “things” that are embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies for the purpose of connecting and exchanging data with other devices and systems over the Internet.

In professional cleaning, IoT can be used to help monitor chemical and water usage in dispensers, to observe the condition of crucial machines such as laundry or warewash machines, or to check when it is time to refill paper/soap dispensers in the washroom.

Robots for Custodial Tasks

Though the use of autonomous automation in the janitorial segment is relatively new, there are some innovations currently being tested that may impact the industry in the future.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented Reality

Examples of AI/Augmented Reality being used in professional cleaning include tablets that assist cleaning professionals in doing their jobs more efficiently.  These may contain work-loading software that help to digitize the cleaning process, keep track of a checklist of tasks, keep track of cleaning supply stocks, and communicate with other custodial staff.

IoT Leads to Efficient Washroom Cleaning

Washrooms are the one area of facilities that generate the largest number of complaints. But when washrooms are equipped with IoT sensors, on-demand refilling of paper or soap dispensers as needed, or cleaning,  is possible.

With more focus on cleaning and hygiene, we expect to see an increased prevalence of IoT and automation across various facilities over the next five to 10 years as this becomes more mainstream in I&I spaces.  For regular updates and analysis of timely topics pertinent to the I&I cleaning market, discover the KlinePULSE: Industrial and Institutional Cleaning Industry Trendssubscription service.
