As salons in most European countries reopen in May (in Russia, they began reopening as early as April 20), all stakeholders of the industry are counting losses and looking ahead. This year is the most challenging in particular for salons, as their closures for one to two months and restricted operations have greatly impacted revenues.
COVID-19’s short–term impact is, without question, greater than the 2008/09 recession. Will the industry’s post-pandemic performance mimic that of the previous “New Normal”?
Salons, along with all other non-essential businesses, will be closed throughout much of the United States for weeks, if not months, to come. While some stopgap and entrepreneurial measures are in place to help stave off business closures (e.g. DIY salon services/kits; virtual and mobile stylists), the economic impact is already significant and, like the pandemic itself, has yet to reach its peak. If the vast salon closures are in place even for only one month, the loss in industry service revenues will be an estimated $5.5 billion. With a recession beginning, consumer behavior and spending in 2020 will shift even more dramatically than it did in 2009.

Newly released data from Kline’s Salon Hair Care Global Series shows that 2014 has been another good year for the global salon hair care market with almost 3% growth. For the first time in three years, Europe shows a positive sales performance. Although Spain and Italy are still lagging behind, Eastern European markets, such as Russia or Turkey, experience double-digit growth, boosting the entire region.
Conditioners is by far the fastest growing category globally, due to a surge in treatment product sales. Feeding the upward growth is a completely new breed of bond multiplier products sparked by the launch of Olaplex. This product can be used as an add-on during a coloring service to reduce breakage or as a standalone treatment to repair and condition the hair and has already generated several copycats.Continue reading
