Kline Pro Salon Industry Database

Unique Salon Industry Database Kline PRO Now Reveals Transaction-Based Product Sales and Service Data in United Kingdom and Ireland

Unique Salon Industry Database Kline PRO Now Reveals Transaction-Based Product Sales and Service Data in United Kingdom and Ireland

PARSIPPANY, NJ – November 19, 2018 – For the first time ever, the professional salon industry can access transaction-based sales data from salons in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The just-published Kline PRO United Kingdom and Irelandeditions are extensions of the highly regarded Kline PRO platform that covers the United States and enables users to access the latest performance data on the professional hair care industry. Based on actual salon transactions, it yields category, brand, and product-level sales and service data on a quarterly basis.

Accounting for 30% of salon revenue, hair coloring services are crucial to the life of salons in the U.K. Kline PRO shows that within these services, highlighting remains the leader in hair color revenue. Meanwhile, balayage/hair painting has had the biggest impact so far this year, with 22% more transactions and a 29% increase in revenue. The average price of the service rose from £61.63 to £65.11.

Stand-alone bond builder treatment services also saw a double-digit rise in revenue. “This is not really surprising given that it has become a necessity due to the current trend of hair color extremes,” comments Paula Gottdiner, project manager at Kline. “What is somewhat surprising is that the average price fell by 2% to £17.29. This could be attributed to the recent influx of products that can be used to provide the service.”

Other segments of the treatment services category did not fare as well. Clarifying treatments were down 28%, followed by scalp treatments at -20%. Thinning hair treatments took the biggest hit at -40%.

Comparing the first half of 2018 to the first half of 2017, product sales through salons in the U.S. and U.K. are down in all categories, resulting in an overall decline of 7.5% and 9.8%, respectively. Ireland, on the other hand, was up 3.7% in total; the only category that showed declining sales (by 3%) was conditioners.

Products designed to provide color-related benefits are in demand. Shampoos for color care comprise 25% of all category sales. The current number-one item is Wella Professionals Color Save Shampoo. Three of the five top new shampoo items in Q2 2018 focus on color: Schwarzkopf’s Blondme Blush Wash Strawberry and Blush Wash Lilac, along with Redken’s Color Extend Blondage shampoo.

In Q2 in the U.K., the kits/promotions category posted revenues that were 3.2% higher than last year. The data showed that Nioxin, the second-leading brand in the category, was driving this gain with a 26% increase; this may explain why in-salon treatments for thinning hair are down, as consumers are using at-home treatments. Interestingly, Private Label appeared in the Top 10 company rankings for every category, which is pointing to the fact that salons are willing to try what has brought success for retailers.

Kline PRO brings these insights and many others, allowing subscribers to learn about the latest drivers and trends by category, the leading marketers of salon hair care products, service revenues, transaction counts, and average prices. REQUEST A FREE DEMO to see what the database can do for your business.

Kline PRO provides an unbiased view of the performance of the professional hair care industry based on hard, transactional data collected from a panel of thousands of salons. The service is delivered quarterly. A rolling historical database covering eight quarters is maintained so that users will have the ability to do full year-over-year comparisons. Beauty Devices Apps

Differences in Beauty Devices Preference Intensify Among Markets but Apps Connect Them

Differences in Beauty Devices Preference Intensify Among Markets but Apps Connect Them

PARSIPPANY, NJ, October 31, 2018 - Sales of beauty devices continue to be strong around the globe, but numbers vary dramatically from one region to another. Sales grow meteorically in Asia, by nearly 25% in 2017. The United States rebounds from negative growth, while growth in Europe slows, partly affected by penetration of non-branded devices from Asia, finds the just-published report Beauty Devices: Global Market Analysis and Opportunities by Kline.

One of the latest trends in the market is not just about what devices can do but how the treatments can be customized, and that is achieved via designated device apps. Beauty devices that can be easily connected to mobile apps are increasing in popularity, as they allow consumers to achieve a more personalized treatment. Many marketers launch new products along with apps, including the recently released Foreo For You app, the Lumea coaching app or the défiderm analyzer and its app, further personalizing skin care routines.

“These apps empower today’s consumer with self-diagnosis, procedure timing, step-by step directions and much more. As consumers seek out brands that offer personalized treatments, strong technical support brands like Foreo and NuFace are resonating with them as they deliver on these attributes,” commented Karen Doskow, Director Consumer Practice.

The global beauty devices market is ultra-dynamic, as each analyzed market boasts its own leaders, different skin care concerns, preferences in devices, and, consequently, different growth numbers within each segment.

While cleansing continues to be the leading skin-care concern globally, with sales registering a healthy growth of over 14%, the segment is leading in Asia only, where it is the largest and the fastest-growing category thanks to strong performance in China and South Korea. On the contrary, sales within this category declined in Japan.

Hair removal is by far the largest skin care concern in the European at-home beauty devices market, with nearly 40% of total market share. The category sales slowdown in Europe due to market saturation. Hair removal devices have also seen declining sales in the United States. However, these devices’ sales skyrocket in China, registering triple-digit growths in 2017.

While the hair removal segment in Europe may be even further affected by regulations that will come into effect in 2022, Europe, along with the United States, is currently enjoying momentum of acne elimination devices. This the fastest-growing skin care concern is experiencing a healthy double-digit growth in 2017.

Europe, unlike other markets, is affected by the influx of inexpensive Asian no-name brands which does not only prevent growth due to price competition, but also builds up a negative image for device products as they do not live up consumers’ expectations. Some consumers tend to characterize all devices as the same, not differentiating between the impacts of complex technologies and customizable properties being offered by the reputable brands.

The market will be further driven by entry of new marketers, either established skin care brands, such as such as Carita, Nivea, and Neutrogena, and electronic appliance marketers, such as LG and Samsung. It is to be seen which segment of marketers is expected to have a better success story in the market.

Amalgam Trend Spotting by Kline—New Textures and Glow Givers Help Hot Summer Items Move Up in Digital Sales

PARSIPPANY, NJ, August 13, 2018—Products offering glowing skin and sun-kissed, beachy hair sans days spent in the sand move up the ranks in Q2 according to Amalgam, Kline’s digital tracking service.

One of the top trends revealed by Amalgam is tanning waters, a new texture in self tanners. Several appeared for the first time in Amalgam during Q2, including Isle of Paradise Self-Tanning Water, St. Tropez Self Tan Purity Bronzing Water Mousse, James Read Gradual Tan Coconut Water Tan Mist Body, and Vita Liberata Invisi Foaming Tan Water with Mitt. Ten tanning waters rank in the top 600 in sun care in June, up from just one in March. All tanning waters improve their score and ranking in the sunless tanning segment in Q2.

Products offering beachy hair rode the wave to positions on the top 100 hair care products list, including IGK Beach Club Texture Spray returning to the best seller list in June, ending the quarter at #16 in hair care. Sun Bum’s Revitalizing 3-in-1 Leave In also showed strong improvement, entering the top 100 for the first time at #83 in hair care.

Hair lightening products also perform well this quarter, such as retro brand Sun In’s return to the charts, which has been absent since last summer. Found on Amazon, the product ranks #30 in hair coloring products with its two-pack. Ouai’s Sun of a Beach Ombre Spray, offering natural looking highlights, debuts on Amalgam in May as a best seller at Sephora and Bloomingdale’s.
