Increased Demand for Pest Management Products Drives U.S. Market Gains

Nearly 40% of pest management professionals (PMPs) have increased the usage of pesticide and insecticide products in the past year, according to extensive structured surveys used to compile our upcoming Professional Pest Management Markets for Pesticides report.

Laura Mahecha, director of Kline’s Agrochemicals sector, says that reasons for the surge include increased demand, more pest incidence, and people being at home for longer periods/working from home and therefore noticing pests more.

“The most commonly treated pests by PMPs include termites, ants, and cockroaches,” she adds, noting that Kline’s survey includes a sample of more than 500 PMPs who hail from large national chains; small independent firms; and include local, regional, and national companies.

Professional pest control is a key service for both residential dwellings and commercial buildings to keep insects and pests controlled and improve human health. Some of the key trends that are important to PMPs in our survey include biological pest control, new technologies and innovation, pest control products that are safe for use around humans and pets, product efficiency, and service

Meanwhile, when it comes to controlling pests around production animals, the market is also increasing, as shown in our Pest Control in Production-Animal Health report

“Pesticide products are key to all kinds of farming, and pest control products are used to maintain or achieve the health of production animals,” reports Mahecha. “Since the last time Kline assessed this market in 2017, we have witnessed double-digit increases. The sharp gains in insecticide use can be attributed to severe drought in some areas and changes in climate which results in increased numbers of insects. Climate change leads to an increase in the population of flying insects and more insects results in more usage of pest control products.”

Animal types in the United States include beef – the largest market segment – followed by dairy, poultry, and hogs. The most commonly treated pests are flies, ticks, mites, darkling beetles, mosquitoes, and others including rodents, fleas, and grubs.  Pest control products come in many forms that are used on or near production animals including premise sprays or foggers, baits, ear tags, manure treatments, injectables, boluses, rubs/oilers/dust bags, on-animal pours or sprays, and feed-through.

In addition to chemical pest control products, producers also use physical control methods such as insect traps, sticky paperboards, insect-killing lamps, and traditional practices.

“Distributors and importers play an important role in the animal health pest control market, exercising product distribution, spreading awareness among farmers, timely supply of products, and providing the support needed.,” Mahecha says. “Most crop protection products, such as insecticides and pesticides, are used at livestock farms as well. International animal health care companies such as Elanco, Zoetis, and MSD Animal Health often supply both pest control products and vaccines, antibiotics, feed additive products, and other animal health products.”
