Electric Vehicles Take Center Stage at New York Auto Show

The New York International Auto Show (NYIAS), dark for the last two years due to the pandemic, officially opened its doors to the general public at the Javits Convention Center in NYC last Friday (it runs until April 24).

During a special preview for the press on April 13, an early look at new models was formally offered from leading OEMs such as Jeep, Hyundai, Kia, and new North America entrant VinFast, from Vietnam. The electricity, no pun intended, was everywhere, as the focus of the 2022 NYIAS is heavily skewed toward electric vehicles (EV), most notably battery electric vehicles (BEV) in SUV, CUV and pick-up trim.

At the Hyundai display on the main show floor, a test track was set up offering attendees ride-along demonstrations in the new IONIQ 5 BEV. Ford, not to be outdone, has a replica quarter-mile drag strip where attendees can ride along and experience the rapid acceleration and braking of the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning BEV vehicles firsthand. The only sound at the launch of both vehicles was the screeching of tires.  VinFast introduced 3 BEV models during its scheduled press event and outlined its launch plans which include exporting vehicles from Vietnam to the United States until its brand-new vehicle assembly facility in North Carolina commences domestic production in July 2024.

While the main show floor was reserved for OEMs introducing and displaying their vehicles, the lower level was fully dedicated to e-mobility in all forms from four wheels to two wheels. Most impressive was the EV Test Track which features EVs from all the main floor OEMs, offering ride-along demonstrations on a very large test track with the goal of having riders experience the full suite of EVs functionality and versatility. To support the anticipated EV penetration in the vehicle parc, SmartCharge New York, conEdison, New York State of Opportunity, Charge NY, and Evolve NY have consumer education and interactive displays to communicate their commitment to expanding charging infrastructure throughout New York State and also the myriad of financial incentives and rebates available to vehicle buyers, all designed to enable a smooth transition to EVs.

Lastly, on the main show floor was Elvis Presley’s 1956 Lincoln Continental Mark II. Clearly, the King had great taste in automobiles and, as evidenced by the door jam stickers on the drivers side door, he also had great taste in motor oil brands.

Kline’s Energy Practice has a full suite of market studies assessing the impact of privately and commercially owned and operated EVs on volumetric passenger car and heavy-duty motor oil demand through to 2040. In addition, the firm offers comprehensive market studies on new and innovative lubricants and fluids for use in EVs. Our Electric Vehicles Fluids: Market Analysis and Opportunities (Commercial Volume) is scheduled for release this month.
