SPF-based sun care moisturizers are among the most dynamic products in the U.S. professional skin care market in 2015. Introduced by several leading manufacturers, SPF-based sun care products are driving market sales and outperforming the total market growth in 2015.
The rising skin cancer concerns and growing awareness regarding the damages of UV exposure are driving more consumers to include sun protection products in their daily regimen. As a result of this increased demand, as well as consumers’ growing need for quick and efficient skin care routines, marketers are increasingly providing solutions in the form of multi-benefit skin care products, which may hydrate and nourish the skin, provide anti-aging protection, and protect the skin from environmental pollution. These products, which are a crossover between skin care and sun care products, are becoming highly prevalent in the industry. According to our Professional Skin Care Global Series report, sales for sun care moisturizers account for almost one-third of the total take-home product sales and grow faster than any other product type, including specialty treatments and eye treatments. Medical care providers is the main distribution channel for sun care moisturizers, accounting for over half of the total sales.
The multi-benefit trend can even be seen in competing product classes, as sun care products are also being combined with makeup products. Tinted sunscreens with blemish cover-up benefits are in demand and are used in lieu of makeup, as more and more manufacturers across the medical care providers and spas/salons channels introduce tinted and SPF-based moisturizers in 2015. Some of the key launches in this segment include SkinCeuticals Physical Matte UV Defense SPF 50 (L’Oréal), Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30 (Unilever), Obagi Sun Shield Mineral Broad Spectrum SPF 50 (Valeant Pharmaceuticals), SkinMedica Total Defense + Repair Sun Screen (Allergan), and ZO Oclipse Sun Spray SPF 50 (ZO Skin Health).
The forecast into 2020 looks bright for multi-benefit sun care, skin care, and makeup products. It is expected that more brands will continue to collaborate with organizations and dermatologists to educate consumers on the benefits of adequate sun protection. Specific skin care benefits, such as environmental protection, anti-aging, and perhaps more dermatological claims like sun care that also treats eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea, are not only expected to enter the professional skin care space by 2020, but will also permeate the retail sun care industry, according to our soon-to-be-published Cosmetics & Toiletries USA report. While multi-benefit products will continue to encourage the usage of SPF among consumers, it is expected that sun care product sales may suffer as more cosmetics and skin care products continue to incorporate SPFs into their products.
