A new year brings many resolutions to “get healthier,” and that pledge extends to the scalp in 2023. Fortunately, consumers have a wide range of products to choose from, and the selection is growing. Since January, 15% of the launches picked up by the New Products Tracker in Kline’s Professional Hair Care Intelligence Center provide scalp care benefits.
Hair care product manufacturers are looking for inspiration from their skin care counterparts in developing products that will both cleanse and condition the scalp, thus creating an environment for healthy hair. Additionally, “hero” ingredients are being sourced to provide users with a unique experience.
Paul Mitchell, which, according to Kline PRO U.S., is the scalp care segment leader in salon retail sales, just added two new items to its Tea Tree line of products, which are grouped as Tea Tree Special Detox. The intent is to detox the scalp by exfoliating away the dead skin and removing product buildup to leave the scalp feeling soothed and balanced. The first product, Special Detox Kombucha Rinse, utilizes fermented black tea leaves (kombucha), which are rich in antioxidants and probiotics. The second item, Special Detox Foaming Salt Scrub, combines powerhouse skin care ingredients such as Himalayan pink salt, French green clay, and volcanic ash particles.
These newest items come on the heels of Paul Mitchell’s launch of the Clean Beauty Scalp Care System, a three-part collection consisting of shampoo, conditioner, and therapy drops. Unique ingredients to this system are grapevine sap and chamomile extract.

Innersense Organic Beauty introduced Clarity Hairbath and Conditioner, which were created for those with allergies or skin or scalp sensitivities. The hypoallergenic and fragrance-free products are formulated with natural ingredients that promote skin and scalp health. The hairbath contains Comfrey Leaf and Japanese Swertia to calm the scalp, while Chufa Milk supplies moisture and antioxidant benefits. The conditioner relies on Colloidal Oatmeal to calm sensitive skin and Manuka Honey and Apricot Kernel Oil for moisturizing benefits.
A new addition to the scalp care scene is Olaplex. The brand best-known for bond-building just introduced Olaplex No. 4D – Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo. Dry shampoo is generally not recognized for scalp care properties, but Olaplex says that this product contains a “light-as-air dry cleansing technology for scalp and hair that feel just washed.” It is clinically proven not to clog pores or leave white residue while it detoxifies the scalp.

In 2020, Revlon presented its RE/START hair care line, which stemmed from a skin care approach. Added in 2023 to the line is RE/START Hydration Scalp Moisturizing Lotion. The product contains hyaluronic complex combined with panthenol to balance and protect the scalp’s microbiome while also providing hydration.

Full-year 2022 insights on all salon services and retail products in the U.S. and Canada will be available with the publication of the Kline PRO Salon Retail and Services Database in late March.
