As we head into 2010, perhaps one of the most overlooked areas of opportunity exists in the consumer pesticides market. At first glance, it might seem counter-intuitive: in general, consumer spending is down, people have lost their jobs, and they are cutting back on expenses.
Most agricultural and specialty pesticides producers are, at this moment, grateful that the industry seems to have borne the brunt of the economic turmoil fairly well. However, we’re seeing strong indication that the effects may have simply been delayed.
An increasing range of crops is being impacted by genetic modification, such as sugar beet, and it is expected that the cost of herbicide tolerant hybrid seed will reflect the significant savings possible with post-emergence contact herbicides. As a result there is strong farmer interest to ensure that seed germination and early development are protected from early loss and injury so that seed populations can be optimized.
Few could argue that the economic downturn has taken a serious toll on nearly every industry in the United States and around the world. However, the most recent survey data from Kline’s 2008 Pest Control in Food-Handling Establishments: U.S. Market Analysis and Opportunities shows that an overwhelming number of food handling establishments continue to invest in pest control, despite the weak economy.
