EV fluids

As electric vehicles (EVs) gain market share, lubricant and fluids manufacturers will encounter a mix of shrinking demand but also rising opportunities across various products, global regions, and timeframes. The advent of electric mobility has the potential to greatly reduce the consumption of motor oils, but it also opens up growth opportunities in high-value products.

Performance requirements for the various fluids consumed in electric vehicles significantly differ from those used in conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. The growth of EVs will herald a new lubricants market niche, focused on meeting the lubrication needs of EVs. Kline’s forecast projects the EV fluids market in select regions to grow at a CAGR of 10.3% to 1.5 million tons by 2040.

Mainstream fluids, including lubricants, greases, and coolants, are currently used in PHEVs and BEVs. However, as sales of BEVs increase, the performance deficiencies of mainstream fluids will become evident, exerting pressure for customized EV fluids. Research efforts focus on the development of transmission fluids and greases in EVs, where the electric motor is integrated inside the transmission box. Adequate wear protection, optimal heat absorption, and dielectric properties are attributes expected in specialized EV fluids.

Types of EV fluids

Coolants

Used to manage the temperature of the battery and other components, ensuring optimal performance and preventing overheating.

Driveline fluids

Provide lubrication for the transmission and other moving parts, reducing friction and wear.

Greases

Used in various components to reduce friction and protect against corrosion.

The transition to electric vehicles is reshaping the automotive fluids market, creating new opportunities for innovation and growth.

Immersion Cooling

Immersion Cooling is an emerging technology that offers significant advantages for data centers and other high-performance computing environments. By immersing electronic components in a dielectric fluid, this method provides superior cooling performance compared to traditional air or liquid cooling systems.
