Professional Skin Care 2018 U.S. and Europe Growth

Professional Skin Care 2018 Preliminary Results Show Impressive Growth for U.S. and Europe

The professional skin care market in Europe and the U.S. continues to register strong growth in 2018, according to our soon-to-be-published Professional Skin Care Global Series report. The increase in both these markets is mainly driven by the medical and retail channels, and consumer demand is high for products containing retinols, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C in both markets.

The professional skin care market in Europe continues on a steady growth trajectory, completing another dynamic year in 2018 and registering higher growth than the year prior. The U.K. registers the highest growth of over 6%, followed by Poland. However, all other segments comprising smaller markets, including Scandinavia and the Nordics, register strong growth in 2018.

Kline Pro Salon Industry Database

Unique Salon Industry Database Kline PRO Now Reveals Transaction-Based Product Sales and Service Data in United Kingdom and Ireland

PARSIPPANY, NJ – November 19, 2018 – For the first time ever, the professional salon industry can access transaction-based sales data from salons in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The just-published Kline PRO United Kingdom and Ireland editions are extensions of the highly regarded Kline PRO platform that covers the United States and enables users to access the latest performance data on the professional hair care industry. Based on actual salon transactions, it yields category, brand, and product-level sales and service data on a quarterly basis.

Accounting for 30% of salon revenue, hair coloring services are crucial to the life of salons in the U.K. Kline PRO shows that within these services, highlighting remains the leader in hair color revenue. Meanwhile, balayage/hair painting has had the biggest impact so far this year, with 22% more transactions and a 29% increase in revenue. The average price of the service rose from £61.63 to £65.11.

Stand-alone bond builder treatment services also saw a double-digit rise in revenue. “This is not really surprising given that it has become a necessity due to the current trend of hair color extremes,” comments Paula Gottdiner, project manager at Kline. “What is somewhat surprising is that the average price fell by 2% to £17.29. This could be attributed to the recent influx of products that can be used to provide the service.”

Other segments of the treatment services category did not fare as well. Clarifying treatments were down 28%, followed by scalp treatments at -20%. Thinning hair treatments took the biggest hit at -40%.

Comparing the first half of 2018 to the first half of 2017, product sales through salons in the U.S. and U.K. are down in all categories, resulting in an overall decline of 7.5% and 9.8%, respectively. Ireland, on the other hand, was up 3.7% in total; the only category that showed declining sales (by 3%) was conditioners.

Products designed to provide color-related benefits are in demand. Shampoos for color care comprise 25% of all category sales. The current number-one item is Wella Professionals Color Save Shampoo. Three of the five top new shampoo items in Q2 2018 focus on color: Schwarzkopf’s Blondme Blush Wash Strawberry and Blush Wash Lilac, along with Redken’s Color Extend Blondage shampoo.

In Q2 in the U.K., the kits/promotions category posted revenues that were 3.2% higher than last year. The data showed that Nioxin, the second-leading brand in the category, was driving this gain with a 26% increase; this may explain why in-salon treatments for thinning hair are down, as consumers are using at-home treatments. Interestingly, Private Label appeared in the Top 10 company rankings for every category, which is pointing to the fact that salons are willing to try what has brought success for retailers.

Kline PRO brings these insights and many others, allowing subscribers to learn about the latest drivers and trends by category, the leading marketers of salon hair care products, service revenues, transaction counts, and average prices. REQUEST A FREE DEMO to see what the database can do for your business.

Kline PRO provides an unbiased view of the performance of the professional hair care industry based on hard, transactional data collected from a panel of thousands of salons. The service is delivered quarterly. A rolling historical database covering eight quarters is maintained so that users will have the ability to do full year-over-year comparisons. This program covers register transactions (salon retail) and services. Data is reported on both the unit and dollar levels.

“The pill” may be easier to obtain in the United States in the near future

“The pill” may be easier to obtain in the United States in the near future

Oral contraceptives (OCs), known commonly as “the pill,” are prescription medications that prevent pregnancy. The most common brands of OCs contain hormone combinations of estrogen, progestin, and/or progesterone. These products have been used for years and were first launched on the U.S. prescription market in the 1960s. While OCs resulted in a new era of pregnancy protection for women, they were not without potential side effects to be considered, including risk of blood clots, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, and breast cancer (particularly for women who smoke). To date, OCs have proven to be one of the most popular forms of birth control, due to ease of use, efficacy, and their good safety profile for most women. Continue reading
