Crop Protection Distributors’ Sales

Crop Protection Distributors’ Sales Decrease During 2015, According to Kline’s Imminent In-season Update

The U.S. crop protection chemical industry experienced a 3.5% decrease among distributors at the cost of goods sold (COGS) level during 2015, according to the recently published report Leading Distributors in the U.S. Crop Protection Industry: A Strategic Market Analysis by global management consulting and market research firm Kline. The report tracks the leading 20 distributors, which account for over 95% of the total sales of crop protection chemicals within the United States. Total 2015 COGS at the distributor level are over USD 10 billion.

The 2015 crop protection industry began with challenging market conditions due to lower commodity prices and tight farmer economics, ultimately resulting in lower corn planted acres and affecting crop protection sales for most manufacturers of crop protection products. High inventories rolled over from the 2014 season forced distributors to provide incentives to growers.Continue reading

Global Biopesticides: An Overview of Natural and Microbial Pesticides

Accounting for Less than 5% of the Global Crop Protection Market in 2014, Bio-pesticides Expand Rapidly

All countries are projected to grow in the double digits or high single digits during this period. The main driver behind current growth is the advent of microbial seed treatments on field crops, such as corn, soybeans, and cotton.Continue reading

Italian Seed Treatment Market

Italian Seed Treatment Market

The sales value of the seed treatment market in Italy based on corn and potatoes is estimated at EUR 4.0 million in 2013. Potatoes have a much smaller area treated, but a significantly larger amount per hectare value, resulting in a larger sales value.

Corn and potatoes have the largest amount of hectares treated in Italy in 2013, with approximately 90% of the corn and about 80% planted potatoes receiving a seed treatment application. These seed treatments can be fungicide only, followed by an insecticide seed treatment application, or the two can be applied in a combination treatment.

The most used seed treatment fungicide on a hectare treated basis is Syngenta’s Celest XL, used mainly on corn, accounting for over 90% of the seed treatment fungicide market in Italy.Continue reading

Brazilian Seed Treatment Market

Brazilian Seed Treatment Market

Agribusiness represents 20% of the Brazilian GDP. One of the factors contributing to the continuing strength of Brazil in the growing global grain market is the rapid adoption of high value seeds. With Brazilian grain production narrowly focused on maize and soybeans, virtually every seed gets treated, often more than once before it is planted.  Kline estimates that nearly 45 million hectares planted received a seed treatment in 2013. Of course, with multiple treatments and crops added, such as rice and cotton, as many as 81 million hectare treatments were made to seeds in 2013.

The total seed treatment market is over USD 600 million in 2013. In terms of seed treatment fungicides, the main fungicide on a hectare treated basis is Maxim XL.Continue reading
