Not only is the source of polyphenols becoming increasingly diverse, but in my view the most exciting industry development is the identification, isolation and extraction of the beneficial molecule from the extract itself. Awareness and availability of ingredients such as resveratrol, quercetin, rosemarinic acid, caffeic acid, gallic acid is increasing and inclusion of these ingredients within a suppliers portfolio is becoming more prevalent.
Since the turn of the century we have been used to thinking of China as the engine of traded petrochemicals demand and so it has been. But that trade has become polarized around an axis that runs between the Middle East’s feedstock cost advantage and Asia’s (especially China’s) fixed cost advantage.
The health and nutrition trend is bolstering the food ingredients industry during the downturn, with a number of companies particularly those focused on the health and nutrition segment announcing positive Q1 results, for example DSM had an 8% increase in net sales for the 1st quarter compared to 2008, stating that “business conditions in Nutrition are expected to remain relatively favorable in 2009”.
Despite the economic downturn, the personal care industry remains an attractive market for suppliers of performance ingredients aimed at delivering the results consumers demand from hair and skin products. The market is ripe for savvy suppliers who can find the right niche and the right buyers for their innovative products to capitalize on the demand for anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, and other products that offer pharmaceutical-quality results without the prescription or the high price.
Innovation continues within the personal care ingredients industry with a significant number of new product launches at both In-Cosmetics and the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) Suppliers’ Day that happened recently. Examples include Eastman who promoted a natural emollient for leave on skin care products and Kobo launched a non-nano zinc oxide.
